More new Google Maps mashups from Australia!

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Fact: Did you know that Google Maps was first developed by an Australian company, that was later acquired by Google? Apparently it was pulled together in just a few short weeks! Pretty impressive. With that, here are all the new Australian Google Maps mashups I've been able to find over the past several weeks. I've also posted a list of all the mashups and tools I've mentioned in previous posts.. Enjoy!

First Australian Real Estate Google Maps Mashup - Sellhouse.com.au hits the Australian online real estate scene as the first known Australian real estate website making use of the Google Maps API. It covers the entire country and is powered by a proprietary geocoding system and includes a database of 8,000+ suburbs. The downside is that it doesn't appear to be viewable in the FireFox browser so be sure to check out this mashup in Internet Explorer only!

Map your fishing trips - Shaun Parkinson has created a new website which utilizes the Google Maps API to help anglers record and map their fishing experiences. All aspects of a fishing trip can be recorded and referenced to identify patterns in times, localities, tides and detailed weather conditions. Check out the Google Map on the page which shows you public info. It's best to register for an account to dive in and look at all available data.

A small correction from SellHouse Australia Real Estate. The Google interactive map works the best on Mozilla Firefox and IE comes the second based on the opening speed. Opera also works fine except non-supported baloon shadows (not a big deal). Netscape is not supported at all. We have just optimized the script and it takes only 4-5 sec to open a map with 150-200 properties using a ADSL 512K, which is a common connection in Australia.

About SellHouse - apparently they fixed their Firefox support.

The two weeks was to convert an existing windows app into a web based one. The back-end, protocol, and drawing code was already written before and took about a year or more (a few developers, who now have Ferraris).

This site is a joke as far as a gmap implementation goes. There's a couple real estate sites on the horizon that will blow this one away. If the developers have ferraris, then I'd like to meet the VC's who funded it as they have no idea.

I believe the comment was in regards to the fact at the top of the post, not SellHouse..

SellHouse is very irritating. It began with some guy walking out in front of the website explaining what the website which pretty much prevented me from using his website.

Oh, and it didn't have Melbourne.
