Unequal Germany

The pay gap between men and women is larger in Germany than in almost every other European country. The gap between the average male salary and the average woman's salary is 21% in Germany, compared to 16% in Europe as a whole.

The pay gap between men and women in Germany depends on where you live. For example the pay gap is not so bad for women living in the former East Germany as it is for women living in the west of the country, If you are a woman working in the former East Germany then you are much more likely to earn a similar wage to an East German man. Women who live in the west of Germany are more likely to earn a lot less than the men living in the west of the country.

Berliner Morgenpost has mapped out the pay gap in each German district. If you hover over a district on the Where women earn more than men interactive map you can view how much less women earn than men, in percentage terms. The map also shows you how much less the average woman earns in Euros compared to the average male salary.
