The Notable People Map Game

Regular readers of this blog and participants in Topi Tjukanov's annual #30DayMapChallenge will probably be familiar with Topi's Notable People map, which shows the birthplaces of famous people around the world. Over the weekend I decided to extend the concept of the notable people map by creating a notable persons game:

Pin the Past

The goal of the game is simple: you’re given the name of a notable person along with a few clues, and your task is to click on the map where you think they were born. The closer your guess, the higher your score.

If you enjoy maps, trivia, and a bit of geographical intuition, this interactive map game is a fun way to test your knowledge of where notable people were actually born.

Pin the Past has two modes:

  1. World Mode - Guess the birthplaces of famous people from anywhere on the globe
  2. Country Mode - Focus on a specific country and guess the birthplaces of famous natives

Each game consists of 10 rounds, with a new person in every round.

🕹️ How to Play

1. For each round, you’ll see:

  • The person’s name
  • Their occupation
  • Their birth year

2. Make Your Guess

Click anywhere on the map where you think the person was born.

3. See the Result

   After your guess:

  • The correct location is revealed
  • A line is drawn from your guess to the actual location
  • You’re shown the distance (in km) and your score

4. View Your Final Score

After guessing the birth locations of ten famous people you’ll see a summary of all your guesses,                    including:

  • Scores per round
  • Distances
  • Photos of each person

🧩 Behind the Scenes

The game is powered by a GeoJSON dataset of notable people and their birth locations. This dataset originates from a public Kaggle collection of historical figures.

The game is built with:

  • MapLibre GL JS for the mapping
  • GeoJSON for famous people data
  • Wikipedia API for dynamic content
  • localStorage for persistent progress

Pin the Past is latest in a series of geo-guessing type map games that I've developed in the last couple of years. If you like this game you might also like:
