12 Million Bike Rides on One Map

bikemap.nyc is an interactive visualization of the entire history of New York City’s Citi Bike system. Every animated arrow you see on the map represents a real bike ride, taken by a real person somewhere in New York City. And there are a lot of them. The map visualizes 291 million Citi Bike trips , spanning more than 12 years , from June 2013 through December 2025. If you want, you can simply sit back and watch all 291 million rides animated across a map of NYC, covering the full lifespan of the Citi Bike system and playing at roughly 150× real-time speed . The data comes from anonymized, publicly available Citi Bike system data. Because this data only includes the names of the starting and ending stations, the routes taken by the animated markers are computed using the shortest path between stations.
