Mapping Hit and Run in L.A.
Between 2002 and 2012 the overall number of hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles County dropped by 30%. That's the good news. The bad news is that during the same period the number of hit and run accidents involving cyclists rose 42%.
The Los Angles Times has mapped all 661 hit and run bicycle accidents and 901 pedestrian accidents in L.A. from 2002 and 2012. The L.A. Hit and Run Map can be filtered by year and by bike or pedestrian victims. The severity of the injury from each hit and run accident is shown by the color of its marker on the map.
The L.A. Times analysis of the data reveals that nearly 20% of the hit-and-runs involving bikes "occurred in five neighborhoods: Long Beach, Santa Monica, downtown Los Angeles, Van Nuys and North Hollywood".
