Mapping the Freedmen's Bureau

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands was a U.S. government agency established to give aide to freed slaves during the Reconstruction era of the United States.

Mapping the Freedman's Bureau is a Google Map dedicated to documenting the many locations that played an important role in the lives of the newly freed survivors of slavery. The map plots the locations where Freedman’s Bureau offices were located. It also maps the locations of other institutions that served former slaves, such as the branches of the Freedman’s Savings Bank, Freedmen Schools and contraband camps.

If you select a marker on the map you can click through to view relevant original documents relating to the location on sites such as Archive.org and FamilySearch
