A Mapped Genealogy of Irish Surnames

On St Patrick's Day everyone you meet will claim to have Irish roots. You can now authenticate these claims by referring to the Geo-Genealogy of Irish Surnames.

This Esri map shows the location of 2,500 Irish surnames by county based on data from an Irish census in 1890. The surname labels displayed on the map are sized to represent relative birth rates in the county of people with that surname.

If you enter someone's Irish surname into the map you can astonish them with a mapped visualization of where their ancestors probably lived in Ireland. If their name doesn't appear on the map you can instead regale them with the story of why there are no snakes in Ireland.
