Mapping Missing Planes

One year after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 the Daily Telegraph has released a map of planes which have disappeared since 1948. Vanished Aeroplanes uses data from the Aviation Safety Network to plot the approximate last known position of missing aircraft with more than 14 passengers.

The year of each plane's disappearance is displayed on the map above the plane's map marker. If you mouse-over a plane's marker you can learn more about the date of its disappearance and the number of passengers.

Last year, a week after the disappearance of flight MH370, CBC also created a Google Map plotting incidents of missing aircraft. The map shows the last flights of aircraft, carrying at least 20 passengers, which have disappeared in the last 50 years.

Planes that Vanished Without a Trace shows the departure airport of each aircraft and a line marking the plane's general direction (without great circle routes applied). If you click on a plane's marker on the map you can find out more about its intended destination and the nature of the flight.
