Mapping Languages in Danger
One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage is an interesting Esri story map highlighting a selection of endangered languages around the world.
UNESCO estimate that around 3,000 languages around the world are in danger of disappearing by the end of the century. This Esri story map highlights just a few of these languages, allowing you to listen to sound recordings of the languages and learn about the efforts being made to preserve the languages and the communities that speak them.
If you select a language from the menu or from the markers on the map you can listen to a recording of the language being spoken. If you select the 'learn more' button you can find out about what actions are being taken to help preserve and revitalize the selected language.
UNESCO used to have an Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger. That map appears to have been broken by updates to the Google Maps API. If you want to map the languages yourself The Guardian Datablog has the data from the 2011 UNESCO list of endangered languages.
