New York Mayoral Election Maps
A number of elections took place yesterday, but by far the most talked-about was the race for New York City mayor - where Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious, securing over 50% of the vote.
According to The New York Times’ interactive map, The Most Detailed Map of the N.Y.C. Mayoral Election (paywalled), Mamdani dominated in much of the city, outpacing former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a wide range of neighborhoods. Yet not all corners of New York swung in his favor. In parts of Queens, Staten Island, and southern Brooklyn, Cuomo maintained strong support.
I can’t claim to fully understand why Cuomo held on in certain neighborhoods, but this map of Median Age in New York might offer some clues. With The New York Times reporting record turnout, it seems likely that one of Mamdani’s strengths was attracting & energizing younger voters and turning them out at the polls. Historically, younger voters (18–29) participate at lower rates than older voters. So the high turnout may be a reflection of increased participation among younger voters. In neighborhoods like Queens, Staten Island, and southern Brooklyn, higher concentrations of older residents may still have contributed to the stronger support for Cuomo in these areas.
