HOT Export Tool

The HOT Export Tool from the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team is an online service for creating custom extracts of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data.

The tool allows users to select an area of interest and produce custom OSM data extracts. You can choose which map features and tags to include (e.g., roads, buildings, amenities, boundaries) and then download the data in multiple file formats (including GeoJSON, ESRI shapefile, GeoPackage, KML, CSV, FlatGeobuf, SQL etc).

🧠 Typical workflow

  1. Define your area of interest (AOI)
  2. Choose the data features and tags you want included
  3. Select the output format
  4. Run the export and download the results
BTW - the church visualization at the top of this post was created by geojsonsorter - a small tool I vibe coded to sort and display a geojson file by area size (and not geographically). This enabled me to download the polygons of all churches in the City of London - using the HOT Export Tool - and automatically sort and display the churches in order of size (largest first).
