Facebook Event Mapping
This Facebook application allows you to create a Google Map for a Facebook event.

Using the app you can create a map tab for an existing Facebook event or you can use the app to create a Facebook event with a map attached.

The application's third option is to create just a map for a location without an event attached.

Foursquare Check-ins on Google Maps

Stadtkinder
stadt
Stadtkinder is an Austrian Google Maps mashup that lets you find events going on in Vienna. The site uses Google Maps to show the locations of 3,877 venues in the city, to tell you what is hot right now and to show you the location of your friends.

The Stadkinder home page features a Google Map that animates through the events occurring in Vienna today. Using the links at the top of the map you can navigate to events happening on different days.

If you select the 'Venues' tab you can see which venues are popular right now based on the number of Foursquare check-ins made at each venue. The popular venues are listed in the map sidebar alongside the number of Foursquare check-ins. The map displays the venues shown and a heat map displays the areas that are hot right now. The map also animates through the locations where people are checking-in with Foursquare right now.

Recording Your Tracks with Google Maps

Xtracked

Xtracked turns your mobile phone into a personal and professional GPS tracking system. The site uses Google Maps, charts and reports to display and analyse your recorded tracks.

The homepage of Xtracked provides a demo of a track displayed on a Google Map. Markers show the locations on the track where the maximum speed was reached and the maximum altitude on the track.

It is also possible to follow your tracks with Street View. The Street View implementation is synchronised to the chart view. When you mouse-over the chart the map is centred at your current location and the Street View panorama reflects the actual view you had when passing that location (by setting its POV).

If you click on the 'More' button you can turn on Traffic and Bicycle layers and switch to Satellite, OpenStreetMap and CloudMade map tiles.

You can learn more about Xtracked at:

It Gets Better with Google Maps

It Gets Better - Worldwide

In response to a recent increase in bullying of gay and lesbian school students in the USA the It Gets Better project are compiling a video archive to tell the stories of gay men and women. The aim of the videos is to show school students what the future could be like as openly gay adults.

Flo Apps Ltd have created a Google Map showcasing some of the videos created around the world as part of the It Gets Better campaign. Users of the map can find videos from their own countries and watch the videos directly from the map.

At the moment many countries are not represented on the map. If you have created a video or know of the existence of a video that is missing from the map you can submit it by completing a short form.

10 Centuries in 5 Minutes

I love this animated map of Europe over 10 centuries. And, so that the Americans don't feel left out, here is a great video of an attempt to visualise Washington as it would have looked in 1814.

Make Your Own Scratch & Sniff Map

With a little help from artist Sissel Tolaas, 'the world's pre-eminent olfactory cartographer', The Atlantic report on how to make a scratch & sniff map. The only Google Map of smells I know of is Nioibu, a Japanese map that describes smells at different locations.

Film Locations on Google Maps

Movie Locations Guide

Website Movie Locations Guide has created three Google Maps to show movie locations in three cities, New York, Los Angeles and London.

As well as the three dedicated city maps each film listing in the Movie Locations Guide shows a Google Map for each of the locations listed on the site. For example, if you look up The Big Lebowski five locations used in the film are listed and you can view each on a Google Map.

Filmaps

Filmaps is a film locations website that also uses Google Maps to show the locations of movies. Filmaps want to help movie fans find the locations in their favourite films.

It is possible to search Filmaps for a particular film or it is possible to search a location to see which film was made there. For example, a search for the Eiffel Tower reveals that four films in the Filmaps database have used the famous landmark as a location.

Each film has its own Google Map. When you are browsing a film's locations it is very easy to add another location if you know of one that hasn't already been added. To do so you just press the 'add a location button' and complete a very short form.

Spatial Queries Added to Fusion Tables!

Google Fusion Tables now offers spatial queries. Using spatial queries, developers can find all features that are located within a given distance of a specified location, find all features that are located within a given bounding box, and find a given number of features closest to a location.

Bounding box queries take the form of:

SELECT * FROM 297050 WHERE ST_INTERSECTS(Address, RECTANGLE(LATLNG(37.2, -122.3), LATLNG(37.6, -121.9)))

Where 297050 is the key for your Fusion Table and the LATLNG coordinates represent the bounding box.

If you want to see how you can add buttons to a Google Fusion map that will load a spatial query I've created a quick example, World Crime Rates. This map shows world crime and homicide rates. The map has queries to view only countries with crime rates over certain figures. It also has two spatial queries - one to show results only from Europe and one that shows results from the Americas. The two spatial queries use the bounding box function.

You can learn more about the new spatial query offering in Fusion Tables in the Fusion Tables documentation.

Via: Search your geo data using spatial queries from Fusion Tables!

Canada's Afghan War Dead on Google Maps

Canada’s Military Fatalities in Afghanistan

Earlier this week we featured Patrick Cain's Second World War Casualty Map of Toronto. Now David Erwin, of Canadian TV show the Agenda, has created a Google Map of Canada’s military fatalities in Afghanistan.

The map shows the home locations of the 152 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and reveals that relative to the population, four times as many soldiers from rural Canada have been killed in Afghanistan as those from urban Canada.

On Remembrance Day (today) the map will feature in Agenda. The programme will be examining if this map reveals that there are two Canadas when it comes to the Afghan mission.
