Isochrone Maps & Employment

Access to Jobs is a very clever Leaflet map which allows you to view the number of jobs you can travel to in the New York Metropolitan Region, within a given travel time. It is an isochrone map which reveals the distance you can travel in a set time and also reveals the underlying employment patterns within that area.

Drop a pin anywhere within the New York Metropolitan Region, select your mode of travel and set your maximum travel time and you can view a visualization of the number of jobs within your given travel time. Individual building footprints on the map are even shaded to show you the type of jobs available within your set travel time.

Using the options in the map sidebar you can refine the category of jobs shown on the map to find the total number of jobs available within your commuting zone for any industry or combination of job types. The map also allows you to view the jobs displayed by education level (degree, high school, less than high school and some college).

Find a Job with Google Maps

JobKaster has relaunched with a beautifully designed new Google Maps interface. JobKaster is a job search app that allows you to search for available jobs by location or by type of job.

JobKaster's new design is very neat and includes some nicely designed intuitive search features. If you select a marker on the map the job listings in the map sidebar automatically scrolls and highlights the selected job. When you pan the map the jobs displayed in the map sidebar also update to list the jobs in the current map view.

The job listings in the map sidebar provide details about the selected job and also provides information about how far the job is from your location.

Finding Tech Jobs with Google Maps

The HN Hiring Map is a Google Map of jobs advertised on the who is hiring thread on Hacker News. It is possible to refine the jobs shown on the map by location, by those offering internships and those with H-1B visa status.

The code for the map is available on GitHub. It is well worth having a scan of the code. There are some clever things going on under the hood of this map, including parsing the HN News thread text for locations and then geo-coding the results.

An alternative source for tech jobs is GitHub jobs. Don't worry there is a Google Map for that as well. GitHub Jobs is a map showing the locations of jobs on the GitHub jobs listings.

If you are looking for a tech job then you might also check out these local tech start-up community maps, many of which include jobs in local tech scenes.

The Great Circle Mapper

The Great Circle Mapper allows travelers to visualize a flight path on a Google Map and calculate the great circle distance in nautical miles and kilometers.

Users can select two or more airports anywhere in the world and view the great circle flight path between the selected airports. You can then view the estimated flight time by choosing an aircraft type or entering the cruising speed.

The Great Circle Mapper includes an API that allows developers to return air route calculations and a range of information about individual airports around the world.

Finding a Job with Google Maps

JobKaster is a Google Maps based job search application. Using the app job seekers can search for jobs by location and also submit their location, professional skills and resume to potential recruiters.

JobKaster can also be used by companies to post their currently available positions.

Currently JobKaster only works in the USA but the site has plans to broaden coverage soon to other countries.
