Searching for Slums with Machine Learning

Machine learning techniques are being increasingly used to detect features in satellite and aerial imagery. Artificial intelligence and machine learning can be used to train algorithms to search for familiar patterns in aerial imagery of the Earth. The reasons for searching satellite imagery can be varied and can be for commercial, environmental or social purposes.

One example of machine learning being used to identify common features in aerial imagery is OneSoil, which uses AI to detect where different types of crops are being grown around the world. Another example is Земляна проказа, which was created using machine learning to identify Ukraine's illegal amber mines. Another example, recently covered on Maps Mania, is Curio Canopy, which has used machine learning based techniques to identify tree canopy cover in European cities.

Another example is Dymaxion Labs Maps of Potential Slums and Informal Settlements. Dymaxion Labs used machine learning to search the satellite imagery of a number of South American cities in order to identify and find slums and informal settlements. The resulting maps are being used to help urban planners and local councils identify where vital utilities need to be directed.

To help identify the informal settlements Dymaxion Labs used the Random Forest machine learning technique. You can read more about the process on the Mapbox blog.

Spy Satellites Spy Shrinking Rain Forest

North Carolina State University has used historical aerial imagery captured by the Corona spy satellite in the 1960's & 1970's to track the loss of the Atlantic Forest. The Atlantic Forest is a rainforest located in the border area between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Over 85% of the Atlantic Forest has now been lost to deforestation.

The Making of a Forest is an Esri story map which uses three different sources to visualize how the rainforest has shrunk over the last seventy years. As well as using historical imagery from the Corona satellite the North Carolina State University analyzed historical aerial photography captured by the Brazilian government in the 1950's & 1980's and Landsat satellite imagery dating back to the 1970's.

As you progress through The Making of a Forest you can view the fixed-wing imagery and satellite imagery from different decades overlaid on top of a map of the Atlantic Forest. This imagery shows how the parts of the rainforest which are now inside the Brazilian and Argentinian national parks in the area are very healthy. Outside of the national parks what was once the Atlantic Forest is now mainly farmland.

All the World Could Live in Argentina

43.5 million Argentinians live in one of the biggest countries in the world. Every Argentinian therefore could theoretically have a lot of space to themselves. However half the population of Argentina choose to live in a 400 km semi-circle in and around Buenos Aires.

You can see how most Argentinians prefer to live close to each other on this new Population Density of Argentina map. The map uses Mapbox's fill extrusion property to show population density in each census tract as a colored height map (the taller and darker the tract the more people live there). If you mouse-over a census tract on the map you can see how much square footage each inhabitant could have if the tract was divided evenly between each person.

According to the accompanying blog post the whole world's population could comfortably live in Argentina. Everyone would have to live in a huge city with the population density of Buenos Aires. If that doesn't bother you then start packing your bags because Argentina certainly has the room.

Talking Graffiti on Street View

Google's Street Art project features a wonderful audio guide to the graffiti of Buenos Aires in Argentina. The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires uses Google Maps Street View imagery to introduce you to some of the city's best street artists and their works of art.

The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires takes you on a guided tour around graffiti in three of the city's neighborhoods; Villa Crespo, Colegiales and Barracas. You can explore the artwork in each of the tours up close using Google Maps Street View. Each of the artworks also includes an audio guide, which provides information on the location, the street artist featured and the individual work of art.

The Google Street Art project is not confined to the street art of Argentina. As well as The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires exhibit, the site features tours of street art in locations all around the world.

Visual Loop's Maps of the Week

Visual Loop's weekly round-up of Digital Cartography is out. There are some great interactive maps in this week's collection, including a few which regular readers of Google Maps Mania will recognize. I also really like two of the maps I hadn't seen before, one from Brazil and the other from Argentina.

In Argentina the Electoral Nacional has released a list of all public and private political donations to the four main political parties. Andy Dow has used the data to create the 2013 Private Contributions Map, a map showing the locations of over 4,800 political donors.

The donors are displayed on the map with circular map markers. The markers are sized in proportion to the size of the donation and colored to represent the political party donated to.

In Brazil Chega de Fiu Fiu is a campaign against sexual harassment. The campaign has released a Chega de Fiu Fiu Google Map in an attempt to map the most troublesome and dangerous places for women in Brazil.

Women who have suffered harassment or have witnessed sexual harassment can share their experiences by adding a marker to the map.

The Argentinian Elections on Google Maps

Hacks / Hackers Buenos Aires has used Google Maps and Fusion Tables to create a series of maps to explore the results in the recent Argentinian Presidential and Legislative elections.

Elecciones 2011 examines the results, trends and the socio-demographic context of the 2011 elections in Argentina. The 'Resumen General' map shows the results for each presidential candidate in each electoral ward.

Other maps provide a choropleth view for the number of votes cast for each presidential candidate in each ward and allow you to examine the socio-demographic make up of each electoral ward.

Buenos Aires in Panorama

Foto Recorridos

Foto Recorridos is a collection of 360 degree panoramic photos of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The site uses Google Maps to show the locations of all the interactive panoramas of the city.

The panoramas contain links that allow you to navigate from one image to another. You can also click on the map markers to load the panorama for that location. As you navigate from one interactive image to another a green line is drawn on the map to connect the panoramas. This feature allows the viewer to tell at a glance which photographs have already been viewed.

Street View Coming for Argentina

Website FayerWayer say that Brazil and Argentina will be the next Latin American countries to get Google Maps Street View after the recent addition of imagery to Mexico.

For those who can't wait for the arrival of Street View FayerWayer have found two websites that already provide interactive 360 degree panoramic imagery in Argentina.

Mapplo

Mapplo have released a preview of a new Street View type service for Buenos Aires. In the preview you can visit the neighborhoods of Palermo, Belgrano, Caballito and other areas such as Recoleta and Almagro. Points of interest covered so far include the River Plate Football Stadium, the Natural History Museum and Centennial Park.

Fotocalle

Fotocalle first featured on Google Maps Mania in November 2009. Fotocalle have a Street View type service for Buenos Aires, Argentina. The site stitches together a number of interactive 360 degree panoramas of the city. The panoramas, just like Street View, include links to adjacent panoramas.

Fotocalle uses Google Maps as a navigation tool. Again like Street View the roads on the map with panoramas are coloured blue and it is possible to drag the map marker to view the panorama at a location.

The Human Race on Google Maps

The Human Race 10k Map

I'm just going to take a brief 5,000 mile detour from Mexico Day on Google Maps Mania for this cool Nike Google Map. On the 24th October the 10k Human Race in Buenos Aires included five celebrity runners who live broadcasted their participation in the race using a combination of voice data, Twitter and Google Maps.

The five runners were Argentine celebrity Favio Posca, the sports journalists German Paoloski and Marcelo Gantman, the actress Brenda Asnicar and the professional runner Oscar Cortinez. During the race they used iPhones to record voice messages that were turned automatically into text, published via Twitter and then plotted on a Google Map.

First New Argentinian Map Mash-up

I think this could be an Argentinian themed week on Google Maps Mania. Yesterday Google Maps introduced road maps in Argentina which should prove a spur to Argentinian Google Map developers.

It certainly provided inspiration for Oh Buenos Aries who worked through last night to provide the first Google Maps mash-up (post road maps).

Hoteis Em Buenos Aires

Hoteis Em Buenos Aires is a Google Map that shows hotels in the Argentinian capital. The hotels are all listed in a sidebar next to the map. Clicking on any of the hotels will open an information window containing a link to photographs and details of the chosen hotel.

Oh Buenos Aries have also created:

Argentina Finally Gets Road Maps

One of the most common questions I get asked via the comments on Google Maps Mania is:

'When is Argentina going to get road maps?'

I've never been able to answer before but now I can.

Today.

Make sure you check out all these Argentina Google Maps mash-ups and for the first time there is a reason to press the button marked 'Map' (if there isn't a button marked 'Map' you can be sure the map maker will be adding one soon)

Argentinian Google Maps Round-Up (Oct 2008)

Dormir en Buenos Aires

Dormir en Buenos Aires is a Google Maps mash-up showing holiday accommodation in the Argentinian capital.

Currently 428 hotels and bed and breakfasts have been mapped. It is possible to search the accommodation options by type, neighbourhood or by the number of stars. It is also possible to search for accommodation in an area around a particular tourist attraction.

Dormir en Buenos Aires manages to get around Google's lack of map tiles for Argentina by using Virtual Earth's new map tiles for the country in conjunction with Google's map engine and satellite imagery.

Basta de Demoler

This Google My Map has been designed by an Argentinian NGO Basta de Demoler (stop the demolition). The map shows architectural heritage in danger in Buenos Aires.

Apparently there are only a few weak laws in Argentina designed to preserve the country's architectural heritage. Therefore Basta de Demoler have created this Google My Map to highlight important buildings in danger of demolition. The yellow markers indicate properties in danger of being demolished, the red and blue markers show those in imminent danger and those already demolished.
