Friday Fun with Google Maps

Some new Street View imagery seems to have appeared in London.

The new imagery is dotted around the capital and includes this shot (above) of the London 2012 Olympics Park. From left to right you can see the Orbit, the main Olympic Stadium and the Aquatic Centre.

In central London it is hard to avoid the Shard, Europe's tallest building, which now dominates the skyline of London. If you click on the image above and load the Street View you can make the building disappear by taking one step forward in the Street View. I believe a lot of Londoners wish they could do that in real-life.

The LOTR Project is busy building a family tree of all the characters in Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings. They have also recently added a mapped time-line of the novel. They haven't used Google Maps but it is one of the best map time-lines I've seen, so I thought I'd include it here.

I love the way the time-line automatically connects with the map and the way the map stays in position as the time-line scrolls.

Spoonflower has created a great tutorial, explaining how you can create Google Maps cushions, using Google Maps satellite imagery.
