Taking the High Road on Google Maps

Heritage Paths

Heritage paths are old paths or roads that have been used for a specific purpose for a number of centuries. They include various types of path such as, Roman roads, Drove roads, Pilgrimage routes etc. The Heritage Paths website have been working with the National Library of Scotland's map department to display nearly 2000km of historic paths in Scotland on Google Maps.

Each path has a dedicated Google Map overlaid with a 1930s Bartholomew map and with the path clearly shown by the use a polyline. The transparency of the map overlay can be adjusted using a slider control.

It is possible to search through the huge database of paths here by routes that are accessible to pedestrians, horses, bikes and or motorises wheelchair. It is also possible to submit paths missing from the database by completing a short form.
