Canada's Winters Are Changing
CBC/Radio Canada has used weather data from Environment Canada to visualize how Canada's winters are getting warmer and less snowy. Forget the Snowy Winters of Your Childhood includes a number of great visualizations of Canada's snowfall and temperature data since the 1970's.
CBC/Radio Canada's visualizations include maps which show how Canada's winter temperatures have risen over the years and how the number of days with snow has fallen. As well as the maps there are a number of visualizations which explore the winter temperature and winter snowfall in a number of different Canadian cities over the decades. Among these are a series of charts showing snowfall depths by month over the years. This series of charts clearly show the snowfall trends in each city since the 1950's.
You can explore Canada's changing climate in more detail (and in different seasons) using the Climate Atlas of Canada. The Climate Atlas of Canada is an interactive tool for exploring how climate change could affect Canada. The site includes interactive maps and articles designed to help Canadians understand how climate change may change our lives and what we can do to try to stop it.
The Map section of the Climate Atlas allows you to visualize how climate change might affect different locations in the country. Using the map you can explore a number of different climate variables, including very hot days, very cold days, average temperatures, very wet days and the growing season. For each of these types of weather you can use a timeline control to explore how climate change will affect Canada over time. Another control allows you to control the severity of climate change that you wish to see visualized on the map.
The Find Local Data section of the Climate Atlas allows you to explore in more detail how climate change will affect your city or town. Select your location and you can view tables and data for a number of different types of weather which might be affected by climate change.
