The Global Peace Index
The world is getting less peaceful. According to the Global Peace Index, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the world is less peaceful now than at any time in the last ten years. Vision of Humanity has been mapping the levels of peacefulness in countries around the world using the GPI since 2008.
The 2018 Global Peace Index shows that the global levels of peace have fallen for the fourth successive year. Iceland is the most peaceful individual country and Europe is the world's most peaceful region. The United States has become less peaceful for the second year running.
You can view the peace index scores for countries around the globe every year on the Global Peace Index 2018 interactive map. The index measures internal and external levels of peace based on a large number of different indicators. If you click on a country on the interactive map you can view its overall Global Peace Index score and how it ranks for each of the different categories. You can also use the map timeline control to view how these rankings have changed over time.
If you click on the US Peace Index you can view an interactive map which ranks the peacefulness of every US state. The state's are rated based on indicators such as the number of homicides and violent crimes. On this map Louisiana is ranked the least peaceful state and Maine is the most peaceful.
