What is Your Walk Score?
Walk Score provides address-level walkability scores, neighborhood maps, transit reports, and bike scores for virtually every city, town, and neighborhood in the U.S. and Canada. Integrated into real estate platforms such as Redfin, it is well-known and widely used across North American real estate markets. Unfortunately, its coverage outside North America is patchy.
This is why Raian Pollock decided to create Walkably.
Walkably maps walkability across 31 European countries, giving every street a score from 0 to 100. The scores are calculated from two factors: Reach (60% of the score) and Street Quality (40%).
Reach measures how far you have to walk along actual streets to reach eight everyday amenities: groceries, food and drink, shops, healthcare, schools, parks, cultural venues and public transport. The closer these amenities are, the higher the score. The availability of multiple nearby destinations also matters, so a street with several grocery stores within walking distance scores better than one with just a single option.
Street Quality assesses how pleasant the surrounding streets are for walking, taking into account traffic, noise, summer shade, nearby busy roads and slope. The shade estimates combine building-height data with tree maps, while noise data is included where city noise maps are available. Walkably also prevents locations with poor street quality from achieving the very highest scores, even if they are close to amenities.
You can search for an address or click any cell on the map to explore its score and see how it was calculated. Walkably identifies the nearest destinations in each of the eight categories, gives estimated walking times, and highlights the best and weakest streets nearby. It also compares walking times with places across Europe, allowing you to see whether your local amenities are closer or further away than they are for most Europeans.
