Exploring London's Geology
It is hard to study the natural geology of London - most of it is hidden underneath slabs of concrete, tarmacked roads and huge buildings. Geologists in London are therefore forced to study the rock types and fossils used in London's buildings and pavements.
London Pavement Geology is a map exploring the types of natural materials used in the city's construction. Using the map you can discover the many types of construction materials used in London buildings, bridges, pavements and other landmarks around the city.
The markers on the map are color coded by category, including igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary and fossil. Click on a marker and you can explore in more detail the geologic features of the materials used, such as the geological age, location of where quarried and a description of how the materials are used.
