Mapping Mass Migration in Colombia

Last week the UN certified that the disarmament of FARC is complete. The occasion marks a huge step in establishing enduring peace in Colombia. Over the last thirty years the conflict has led to the death of hundreds of thousands of Colombians. The conflict has also forced millions of Colombians out of their homes.

Over the last thirty years the conflict has led to almost 7 million Colombians having to give up their homes. Most of them moving from the countryside to Colombia's bigger towns and cities. The Center for Spatial Research at Columbia University has mapped this huge displacement of the Colombian people in Conflict Urbanism: Colombia.

The map uses data of the internally displaced population to visualize the movement of displaced Colombians, mainly from the countryside to Colombia's urban centers. You can select individual towns and cities on the map to view the number of displaced people who have moved their since 1985 and where in the country they have been forced to move from.
