China Be Dammed
If there's one thing that China likes more than a smoggy city it is a dammed river. China is actually trying very hard to decrease its reliance on fossil fuels. One outcome of this is a huge expansion in hydropower.
China is planning to build 84 major dams in the southwest of the country. The Wilson Center has released an interactive map showing the locations of all the proposed dams. Do China’s Dam Plans Hold Water visualizes proposed dams, those under construction and those in operation.
The Wilson Center reports that the consequence of this expansion will increase China’s hydropower capacity to more than that of Europe by 2015, and more than that of Europe and the United State combined by 2020.
