Climbing the 3d Mountain

Last week Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson became the first climbers to free-climb the 3,000-foot Dawn Wall of El Capitan. Since then I've been inundated with e-mails from people linking to the New York Time's The Dawn Wall interactive.

I opened the interactive a few times in a non-WebGL enabled browser and was impressed with the Times' use of a photo of the Dawn Wall, with the route and photos of the climb superimposed on top. The problem is that the Times' interactive downgrades so well that I was unaware that there is an even better interactive available if you view the site in a WebGL enabled browser.

Open The Dawn Wall interactive in a WebGL enabled browser and you get to view a truly impressive 3d model of the route created by Battista Matasci of the University of Lausanne. As you scroll down the interactive the model rotates and zooms with impressive speed.

I'm obviously a late-comer to this one but if you haven't viewed the Times' interactive in a WebGL browser yet then do so now.
