Spatial Patterns in Neighborhood Diversity
A new Leaflet powered map and interactive graph allows you to explore the racial and ethnic diversity of towns and cities in the United States. The interactive visualizes the 'diversity gradient', showing how diversity varies in urban areas as you move from city centers out to the suburbs.
Locating Neighborhood Diversity in the American Metropolis provides a visualization of diversity in a number of U.S. cities. Each visualization includes a choropleth map and a scatterplot. The choropleth map view provides an overview of diversity scores in each city neighborhood. The scatterplot shows how diversity changes as you move further from the city's urban core.
Using the interactive tool you can get a good sense of not only which neighborhoods are the most and least diverse but how far from the city center the most and least diverse areas tend to be. The interactive also includes the option to view changes to a city's diversity gradient over time, providing a comparison of the scatterplots and neighborhood maps for 1990, 2000 and 2010.
