Iranian Google Maps Mashup

PersiMoon Urban Atlas

I think this is the first Iranian Google Maps mashup that has actually been created in Iran to feature on Google Maps Mania. This nicely designed map of Mashhad, Iran shows the locations of doctors in Masshad. The map also features a number of geotagged photographs of the city.

In the map side panel there are a number of other options to view cafes, hotels, cinemas and other points of interest in the city.

View Packet Routes with Google Maps

Visual Trace Route Tool

You Get Signal are using the Google Maps API to visualise the path Internet packets take to reach a specified destination. The tool works by identifying the IP addresses of each stage taken on the way to the destination network address.

When all of the locations on the route are identified, the path to the destination is animated on Google Maps. All the hops taken by the packets are also displayed in the map sidebar. It is possible to click on the locations in the sidebar to view their locations on the map.

Plane Crashes on Google Maps

Alameda Point Plane Crash

The new aerial imagery in Google Maps shows what looks like a plane crash at Alameda Point in California.

However worry not. The plane crash is actually a mock up created for an episode of the paramedic series Trauma.

The episode featured a mock plane crash for which pieces of a Boeing airliner were used to simulate a crashed plane.

Universal Studios - War of the Worlds

Another staged plane crash can be seen in the aerial view of Universal Studios in Hollywood. This time the plane crash can be found in the War of the Worlds set at the Los Angeles theme park.

Google Buzz on Google Maps

Google Buzz Map

A lot of you have probably been enjoying the Buzz layer in Google Maps for Mobile. It is also possible to view the Buzz layer for Google Maps on your home computer.

Click here to load the Google Maps for Mobile map in your browser. Then choose 'Buzz' from the 'Layers' menu (bottom left corner). The map will then display the buzzes around your current location.

If you want to check out the latest buzzes in other locations simply pan the map to another location or use the search box to zoom to another location.

For Winter Olympics fans here's the current Buzz in Vancouver and in Whistler.

Tracking Politicians with Google Maps

Brighton Pavilion Canvassing Map

Sadly the compulsory electronic tagging of politicians has not yet been introduced. However The Argus newspaper has effectively solved this problem by crowd sourcing the whereabouts of electoral candidates in Brighton Pavilion.

In the UK a national election is fast approaching. The local newspaper for Brighton has decided to use Google Maps to track the movements of the three main candidates. The newspaper's readers can log where they have seen the electoral candidates and, if they spoke, what they said.

The colour of the map markers on the map reflects the colours of the three political parties.

I still think electronic tagging would be more effective.

Olympics Videos on Google Maps - Updated

Winter Olympics Video Map

Mibazaar has put together this Google Maps mashup showing geo-tagged YouTube videos of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The videos are embedded directly within the information windows on the map. Each information window also includes forward and back buttons so that you can navigate to the other videos on the map.

JotPix

JotPix is a YouTube and photographs Google Maps mashup. The application allows people to embed location specific photos and videos on a Google map.

JotPix usually concentrates on travel video but has produced a special Vancouver Google Map featuring 2010 Winter Olympics videos. The videos currently include coverage of the Olympic Torch relay and some early action from the games themselves.

If you aren't that interested in the Olympics you can search JotPix for travel videos from around the world. It is possible to search for videos by location directly from a Google Map or use the site's search box.

Authors on Google Maps

Map of Author's Birthplaces

Soren, of Microformats.dk, has produced a Google Maps mashup to show the birthplaces of the authors whose books are on the list of the top 250 books borrowed from UK libraries. The data for the map comes from The Guardian's Data Store.

If you click on a map marker you will find out the birthplace of the author and their number on the list. Of course some authors, for example Danielle Steel, have more than one book on the list.

Soren says he couldn't discover the birthplaces of Julia Gregson, Mark
Mills and Sam Bourne. They have therefore been added to the map in the sea off England.

As this list is from books borrowed from UK libraries it isn't surprising to see that a large number of authors on the list were born in the UK. What is interesting is that most of the authors from the US originate from the east coast. I also find it rather sad that the British don't seem to have an appetite for texts written in other languages or from non-Western cultures. There aren't many authors on this list who weren't born in English speaking countries.

Google and Bing Maps Bird's Eye View

Bird's Eye View

This map places Bing Maps' Bird's Eye View side by side with Google Maps' new Aerial View. It took me a few hours to put this together last night and provides a good comparison of the imagery available in each map.

I've selected a number of views to choose from. To view a location just click on one of the buttons under the map.

The map does have a few bugs. For some reason the map controls in the Google Map have gone a bit wonky. Bing Maps always zooms in too far for some reason and I have still to work out how to get both maps to synchronise properly. I'd like to develop this so that when you pan or rotate one of the maps the other map will update automatically. But I'll leave that for another day - or for someone with a little more patience.
