Mapping Car Accidents in Birmingham

The Open Transport EU Car Accidents map is a visualization of 28,519 car accidents in the UK city of Birmingham. The map uses Open Transport EU's own WebGLayer JavaScript library for exploring coordinated multiple views of location data.

As well as the heatmap the Open Transport EU Car Accidents map includes a number of interactive graphs which show the number of car accidents in the city by day of the week, time of day, severity of accident, the speed limit and by date.

Each of these graphs can also be used to explore the data in detail. Using the graphs to filter the results shown on the map means that you can view accident hot-spots in Birmingham by time of day, day of the week etc.

Birmingham - Then & Now

The UK hotel chain Travelodge has published an interesting website looking at the evolution of Birmingham. Evolving Cities - Birmingham explores the changing landscape of England's second largest city through vintage photographs, maps and Google Maps Street View.

The most interesting part of Evolving Cities is a series of before & after photographs of some of the city's most well known landmarks. These before & after visualizations allow you to swipe over a view of the city and directly compare modern photographs of the city with vintage photographs of the same view, as it looked at the beginning of the 20th Century.

On each of these before & after photographs you can also click on the pegman icon to explore the depicted location in Google Maps Street View. The Street View option also displays a Google Map of Birmingham. This map is populated with a number of markers showing the location of a number of points of interest around Birmingham and the locations of Travelodge hotels in the city.
