Tourists vs Locals in Bangkok

This week Eric Fischer's Locals and Tourists map has correctly been getting a lot of love again on social media. The map analyses Twitter data to highlight areas of cities popular with locals and the places where tourists visit.

His city maps show the locations of Tweets sent by locals (those who post in one city for one consecutive month or more) and tourists (whose tweets are usually posted in another city). The maps provide a fascinating insight into locations that are popular with tourists and into areas which are popular with locals but go largely unseen by tourists.

One thing missing from the maps is an actual street map. The result is that unless you are a local yourself you probably won't be able to identify the locations which show up as clusters (for locals or tourists) on the map.

Greg to Differ has tried to overcome this omission in Eric's maps by overlaying the Twitter data for Bangkok on a series of static Google Maps. In Tourists vs Locals: Mapping Where People Tweet in Bangkok Greg examines different Bangkok neighborhoods, using his local knowledge to examine the data in each map and explain the local locations that appear popular with locals and the locations favored by tourists.

Each static neighborhood map includes a transparency control which allows you to adjust the opacity of the Twitter overlay and compare it with the road map underneath,

Night Insects Near The Rice Fields

If you want a nice gentle start to your Sunday morning might I suggest that you tune into this Sound Map of Doi Saket. Doi Saket is a rural village in Thailand surrounded by rice fields. This sound map allows you to take an aural tour around the village and listen to the sounds, both natural and man-made.

It is very relaxing listening to the sounds recorded around Doi Saket. If you just leave the map up in the background each recording seems to seamlessly blend into the next, so you can progress from listening to 'A Wind Chime And Children At The Buddhist Temple' straight into 'Night Insects Near the Rice Fields'.

Custom Street View in Thailand

Bangkok Street View is a nice example of a Google Map that uses its own interactive panoramic imagery to extend coverage where Google Street View doesn't reach.

Bangkok Street View has a lot of Street View type coverage in the Thai capital. Users can navigate the imagery using a Google Map. The map uses the familiar blue lines that are used by Google to show where the interactive imagery is available.

If you want to quickly view the imagery of popular destinations in Bangkok you can also use the drop-down menu at the top of the map to zoom to temples, palaces and well known monuments.

Using Elevation with Google Maps

Thai web development company Computerlogy are one of the Google Maps API developers featured on Google's new MoreThanAMap website.

When flooding affected much of Thailand last year Computerlogy released a handy Google Maps based application that allowed users to check the elevation of any address. Check Elevation has an easy to use interface. Users can search for an address and can simply click on any point on the map to find the elevation at that point.

The information window that opens to show the elevation details also includes two buttons to share the elevation at that location via Twitter or Facebook. This allowed users to check the elevations of their friends and family's homes and be able to easily share and pass on the information.

If you want to include elevation information in your own Google Maps then check out the Elevation Service section of the Google Maps API.

Thailand Gets Street View

Wat Arun, Bangkok

With all the excitement of the release of Street View in the Amazon the release of Street View imagery in Poland and Thailand has almost gone unnoticed.

Poland now has Street View coverage in most of the major towns and in Thailand there is a lot of coverage in and around Bangkok and in the north around Chiang Mai.

The Thailand Floods on Google Maps

The floods in Thailand now look set to affect the capital, Bangkok. The government has decided to open flood gates to try and control the flow of the flood waters through the city's canals.

The likely affect will be flooding around the canals and officials have urged residents in seven Bangkok districts to move their possessions to higher ground.

The Thailand Flood Monitoring System is using Google Maps to show the areas currently affected by the flooding.

Google Crisis Response has also created a Google Map for the 2011 Thailand Floods.

Where Street View Fears to Tread

There are still quite a lot of gaps in Street View's coverage around the world. Luckily a number of other providers have created their own Google Maps based Street View applications to try and plug these gaps.

China - with City8

In China City8 have created extensive interactive 360 degree panoramas in 45 of the country's biggest cities.

MapJack

As well as providing Street View type imagery in the USA, Canada, Singapore and Sweden Mapjack has also ventured where Google Street View has so far feared to tread. MapJack has great coverage in Malaysia, Thailand and Puerto Rico.

Norc

Norc has great coverage in central and eastern Europe, including in Poland and Austria, where Google's Street View cars have yet to drive.

Thailand Protests on Google Maps

Red Crisis in Bangkok

The Bangkok Post have produced this Google My Map to show the extent of the troubles between the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and the army in Bangkok.

The map seems very up-to-date (as I write it was updated 1 hour ago). However, according to The New York Times, staff members of The Bangkok Post "were forced to flee attacks in the capital".

The map shows the locations of the clashes in the city between government forces and protesters from the UDD.

mapdoo map
Mapdoo allows users to search for places in Malaysia. As Google doesn't provide geo-coding for Malaysia the developers have plugged in their own geo-coder to the search engine. It is therefore possible to search Mapdoo for streets, places and businesses in Malaysia.

Anyone can use Mapdoo for free and you can even add your own business to Mapdoo's listings. The map has thousands of businesses listed and it is possible to search this huge database of mapped locations either via a search box or by selecting type of business from a range of options.

Singapore
Singapore VR
Singapore VR is a website featuring hundreds of interactive panoramic photographs of Singapore. The panoramas include Singapore's top tourist destinations and also many restaurants and other entertainment locations. Each panoramic photo is tagged on a Google Map. The video below provides a pretty good introduction of what you can find on Singapore VR.

Google Maps update for: Russia, Turkey, Taiwan, Thailand, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania!

Google Maps Mania readers from around the world are noting updates to Google Maps in several countries worldwide today! Here is the rundown of countries that are seeing updates:

In some cases there are enhancements to the road/street maps that were there previously (Greece for example) and for some countries streets and roads are completely new (Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey) This update of streets, roads and other points of interest will have a huge impact on users of Google Maps in these areas. It means that satellite imagery is now more relevant and easier to identify when "sightseeing" using the hybrid map view toggle. In addition, Google's new My Maps map creation tool is now instantly available for millions of people to begin creating and sharing interesting maps for these countries!

Know of other countries seeing updates or want to leave some feedback? Post a comment! :)
