The Working Class Heroes Map

Yesterday I posted links to a number of history maps. One thing that all those maps have in common is that they mostly document the actions of empires, wars, borders, and elite figures - the traditional historical narratives written by and for those in power. What these maps largely omit are the stories of the working class heroes who have struggled and fought for equality, workers' rights, and social justice.

History is made not only by kings and politicians, but by billions of ordinary people struggling to build a better world - often in defiance of those same political 'leaders'. The Working Class History Map challenges the traditional, top-down historical narratives most of us learn in school and instead concentrates on the stories of working class heroes (and a working class hero is something to be).

These working class stories can be navigated of course by location, but the map also includes a dedicated search box for keyword and phrase searches, and a filter control to narrow down the historical events displayed.

The map itself is part of a larger, ambitious Working Class History project, which includes Podcasts (like the long-form Working Class History podcast and the daily On This Day in Working Class History), and a Stories page - that documents the latest entries posted to the map.
