A Map of Spain's Mass Graves
No matter where you are live in Spain, you’re never more than 50 km from a mass grave of the Spanish Civil War.
Spanish broadcaster RTVE has launched The Country of 6,000 Mass Graves, an interactive map documenting the known burial sites from the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. The map documents 6,000 known graves, of people killed during Franco's political repression, of soldiers killed in combat and of civilians killed in bombings.
Users can filter the map by grave status - exhumed, not exhumed, or moved to the Valley of Cuelgamuros. The map also features colored markers that indicate graves that have related news RTVE news reports. Click through on these markers and you can watch the historical RTVE report on the discovered grave site.
Nearly 1,500 graves have been exhumed since the end of the Franco dictatorship, but more than 2,300 remain unopened. Since 2000, the remains of over 17,000 individuals have been recovered, though only about 700 bodies have been identified via DNA.
RTVE says that the map 'will continue to be updated with new exhumations and identifications of victims.' However they also note that some missing individuals may never be found.
