Icons of Tokyo
I recently visited the Pictograms exhibition at the Japan Center in London. At the heart of this exhibition were a number of icons designed by the Nippon Design Center, Inc., a renowned Tokyo-based design studio.
Today's 30DayMapChallenge theme is Icons, and my first thought was: how could I utilize Nippon Design Center's beautiful Tokyo tourism icons? I already had an animated map of Tokyo showing a train traveling around the Yamanote Line, with each station’s melody playing as the train arrives. For this challenge, I simply needed to add Nippon Design Center, Inc. pictograms for the train stations, as well as their icons for some of Tokyo's most famous landmarks.
These pictograms were designed as part of the EXPERIENCE JAPAN PICTOGRAMS project, a novel set of visual symbols developed to enhance the tourism experience for people of all cultures and ages. The pictograms are simple and intuitive, making it easy for anyone to understand each icon at a glance. They were created to form part of the basic infrastructure for tourism in Japan, combining functionality and aesthetics to help as many visitors as possible.
I encourage you to explore the Pictograms in full. There are many more that I could have added to my map of Tokyo - but it’s Friday night, and I’m done mapping for now!
