Mapping Memorials to the Victims of Fascism
Memorial Markers is an interactive map showing the locations of memorials to those persecuted or murdered by the Nazi regime in Germany.
Originally a Munich-based initiative, the Memorial Markers project is now steadily expanding beyond the Bavarian capital. Munich has installed 317 plaques since 2018, each placed at the last known residence of someone persecuted or murdered by the Nazi regime. These markers give individuals - many largely forgotten - a place in the city’s contemporary social landscape.
The cities of Ingolstadt, Landau an der Isar and Oldenburg are now being added to the map. Currently the maps of Ingolstadt, Landau an der Isar are a little empty but in Oldenburg there are now 88 plaques at 36 locations. This autumn, Weilheim in Oberbayern also committed to adopting the same format of memorials, featuring gilded plaques and stelae installed at eye level.
Exploring Memorials Through Maps
The map itself serves as the digital center of this expanding network of memorials. It allows users to:
- Browse memorial locations across multiple cities
- Read concise biographies of those commemorated
- View photographs of those memorialized
The interface is designed as both an educational tool and a spatial archive. By situating each victim’s story at the place they once lived - or, in some cases, at the place they were murdered - the project restores visibility to individuals whose lives were erased by the Nazi regime in Germany.
