The 10 Minute Map Challenge

Today's #30DayMapChallenge is to create a map in just 10 minutes."The maximum allowed time to design and produce this map is 10 minutes. Focus on speed, simplicity, and core communication".

My 10 Minute Map shows how far you can walk in ten minutes from Fenchurch Street Station in London. This station is notorious for having no direct Tube connections. Yet, a number of tube stations are just a short walk away.

For my map, I spent an hour traveling into central London, walking, and recording tracks from Fenchurch Street to Tower Hill, Tower Gateway, Aldgate, and Monument stations. Tower Hill and Tower Gateway took only a minute to reach, while Monument was the longest - a five-minute stroll.

Once the map was done - complete with a black circle showing an estimated ten-minute walkshed - I realized I should have also recorded tracks walking to Bank, Aldgate East, and Liverpool Street stations, all probably within this ten-minute radius.

Coding the map itself took about 13 minutes. But I also spent 90 minutes traveling, walking to stations, and returning home. If I was allowed more than ten minutes, I would add labels for each station, timestamps for each walk, and a label for the large ten-minute walking circle.

Even as a rushed exercise, I think that the map proves that Fenchurch Street (despite its reputation) is in fact very connected to the rest of London's transit network.
