Geo Racers: The Ultimate Travel Game

Race Across the World is a BBC television game show in which contestants must travel from a starting point to a final destination on a low budget - using only land and sea transport. For American readers, think The Amazing Race but on a strictly limited budget and with no flying.

Geo Racers is a really fun new game that lets you play Race Across the World style challenges without having to leave home. In the game, you must travel from Inverness in Scotland to Gibraltar with just £500 in your pocket. There are also two strict rules:

  1. You can’t fly.
  2. You must be in a hotel by 2 a.m. unless you have overnight transport.

This means your only travel options are walking, taking the bus, or catching a train. I’ve played the game twice now and made it as far as Bordeaux - where I found myself at two in the morning without enough money for a hotel… so, Game Over.

What makes Geo Racers so addictive is that the moment you fail, you’re immediately determined to try again and beat your previous best distance. Each run teaches you new strategies and you learn a little more about where you have overspent. It therefore becomes a personal challenge to refine your strategy and push just a little farther next time.

Top tip: When you walk to a bus or train station, click on the coloured circle that appears around the station on the map to see the available services.

At the moment, there is only one route available to play (Inverness to Gibraltar), but according to the opening screen, London to Rome and Belfast to Athens routes are coming soon.
