War Atlas: Mapping 3,500 Years of Conflict

War Atlas is an interactive, web-based map that visualizes 8,500+ historical battles spanning from around 1500 BC to the present day - providing users with a guided historical tour of human conflict.

At its core, War Atlas is an interactive timeline-driven map. Users can select a specific war, explore through time using a slide control or through inputting a specific year, and see battles appear sequentially as points on the map. The current dataset includes roughly 8,500 battles, sourced from open-source historical data, with Wikipedia links attached where available.

The dataset is currently Euro-centric, reflecting the bias of many existing open datasets. However coverage for Asia and the Americas is actively being expanded. War Atlas also includes a set of Guided Tours, which provide a curated historical walkthrough through a number of important conflicts. Each tour focuses on a specific theme - such as WWII: Turning Points, the Napoleonic Wars, Ancient World Conquests, the American Civil War, or Medieval Warfare - and presents a handpicked sequence of some of the key battles in these conflicts.
