Historical GeoGuesssr

WenWare is a fun, time-travel twist on GeoGuessr. The hook? You aren’t just guessing your location - you’re guessing the date.

The game drops you into AI-generated panoramas of famous historical events, asking you to identify both the “where” and the “when.”

Sounds simple enough, right? In practice, however, the game’s success feels tied to the modern era. While the Modern period features recognisable scenes - the Wright brothers’ first flight, the construction of the Crystal Palace, or the Russian Revolution - the Medieval and Ancient modes struggle to provide similarly identifiable panoramas. Because the AI-generated scenes are often too generic, identifying a specific historical moment becomes guesswork. For example, when presented with a standard-issue field of knights, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish which battle is being shown.

Apparently that is the Battle of Edington CE 878. However the lack of distinct visual cues means that identifying this event feels more like a coin toss than a history test.

That said, WenWare is an undeniably fun concept. If you stick to the Modern History panoramas, the game seems like a fun history challenge. While the older eras may need some fine-tuning to lose their generic feel, the core loop of hunting through time is addictive enough to keep you clicking the 'Next' round button.

If you find the tech behind AI-generated panoramas interesting, it is worth checking out GeoRemix on GitHub. While a separate project from WenWare (it is a research-oriented tool developed by the BIT Student Scientific Group at AGH University and NVIDIA) it explores this exact same concept. Their GitHub repository provides a deep dive into the "AI Processing Chain" - showing how they use ComfyUI and SDXL models to restyle real-world street imagery into thematic historical scenes.
