This is Not Normal

In the UK, the hottest June day on record has been broken three days in a row. And it's not just the UK experiencing unprecedented levels of heat. France, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands have also recorded their highest-ever June temperatures in the past week.

You can get a sense of the scale of the heat dome currently sitting over Europe with the European Heat Tracker. This map shows how today's temperatures compare with the 1961–1990 average across Europe. Areas shown in red are experiencing above-average temperatures. If you hover over a location on this map you can also view today's temperature at that location and the difference with the historical average.

The map's sidebar provides a useful summary of conditions across Europe and how they compare with the long-term norm. For example, today it reports that temperatures across Europe are approximately 6.7°C warmer than the 1961–1990 average. In total, 401 million people are experiencing temperatures of 30°C or higher.
