SimCity London: The Pixelated City
London, drawn
Isometric NYC appears to have started something of a trend. In the last few weeks alone it has inspired both Isopolis - San Francisco and now London, drawn, another sprawling AI-generated city rendered in the style of a classic SimCity map.
Covering 216 square kilometres (roughly Zones 1 to 4), London, drawn transforms the capital into a giant pixel-art illustration that invites the same kind of leisurely browsing as a detailed painting. Pan across the city and you'll spot famous landmarks, hidden mews, sprawling parks and winding streets, all rendered in a beautifully consistent isometric style. The map even includes 183 annotated landmarks, allowing you to click on many of London's best-known buildings to learn more about their history and significance.
The finished map feels effortless, but the accompanying "story"explains just how much human work lies behind a good AI-generated map. The developer documents every stage of the process in remarkable detail, from capturing thousands of carefully aligned images from Google's Photorealistic 3D Tiles to discovering the ideal camera angle, height and tile size.
Creating London, drawn required thousands of rendered source images, extensive prompt engineering, repeated experimentation, manual quality control and painstaking efforts to hide the seams between more than four hundred AI-generated squares. The AI may have painted the city, but it still took weeks of human judgement to teach it how.
