The Many Maps of the Odyssey

Since the launch of the Google Maps API back in 2005, two fictional journeys have been mapped over and over again: Phileas Fogg’s global circumnavigation in Around the World in Eighty Days, and Odysseus’ long voyage home in the Odyssey.

For some reason Homer’s hero is having a bit of a moment - and a sudden surge of new Odyssey maps means Odysseus seems to have pulled ahead of Phileas Fogg in the fictional journey mapping contest.

The Odyssey Journey

The latest entry in this sudden wave of Homeric cartography is The Odyssey Journey, an animated, narrated retelling of Odysseus' decade-long voyage back to Ithaca.

The route unfolds across a beautifully illustrated, hand-crafted SVG map of the Mediterranean, which provides a striking backdrop for an automated guided tour through all fourteen stages of the hero's journey. As the map slowly pans and zooms between locations, narration recounts each episode, from the fall of Troy and the encounter with the Lotus-Eaters to the Cyclops, the Sirens and, finally, Odysseus' return home.

Rather than asking visitors to click from waypoint to waypoint, The Odyssey Journey plays more like a short animated documentary. The combination of smooth camera movements, subtle visual effects and spoken narration gives the experience a cinematic quality that feels much more engaging than a conventional interactive map.

What sets The Odyssey Journey apart isn't its interpretation of where the Sirens sang or where Calypso lived, but the way it uses animation, narration and elegant cartographic design to tell Homer's story. Rather than simply plotting a sequence of locations, it demonstrates how a map can become part of the narrative itself.

Atlynx Maps' Odyssey

Also worth exploring Atlynx Maps' Odyssey offers a different take on Homer's epic. Like The Odyssey Journey, it traces Odysseus' route across the Mediterranean and even includes animated transitions between each chapter. 

At the end of each chapter if you click "Continue the Journey", a tiny ship sails along the route to the next destination, providing a satisfying sense of progress through the story. Each stop includes concise explanations of the events that unfold there, allowing readers to follow the voyage at their own pace while learning about both the geography and mythology of the Odyssey.

The site also includes a companion map tracing The Search of Telemachus, allowing readers to follow Odysseus' son's parallel journey across Greece as he searches for news of his missing father. Together, the two maps offer a remarkably comprehensive mapping of Homer's epic.

Reading Maps

Reading Maps also features an interactive map of Odysseus' voyage. The route is divided into thirteen numbered stages, allowing readers to click through each episode of the adventure in their own order. 

Like Reading Maps' other literary maps, every leg of this journey has been carefully reconstructed from the original text, with sea voyages generated using A* pathfinding to create realistic maritime routes that hug coastlines rather than simply drawing straight lines across the Mediterranean.
