There are 6,000 Stories in the Naked City

Stories of New York City, Mapped is an interactive map of the New York Times' long-running Metropolitan Diary column. For nearly fifty years, the Metropolitan Diary has been the Times’ home for reader-submitted vignettes, eccentric anecdotes, and overheard snippets of conversation that define life across the five boroughs. By geolocating thousands of these stories, the map creates a fascinating geographical archive of the city's collective memories..

The map includes a timeline that allows you to explore how these stories have accumulated over the decades, while filters make it easy to browse different types of locations and experiences. It's an engaging way to discover New York through the personal anecdotes of the people who live there, revealing how even the most ordinary places can become the setting for memorable moments.

The project is also a nice example of modern web mapping. Built with SvelteKit and powered by MapLibre GL JS, it remains fast and responsive even while displaying thousands of mapped stories, making it easy to explore half a century of New York life.

It's the kind of map that rewards aimless exploration. Pick a neighbourhood, move through the decades, and you'll quickly discover that almost every corner of the city has a story waiting to be uncovered.
