In 1950 only 30% of the world's population was living in cities. Today, in 2015, 54% of us live in cities. By 2050 the percentage is expected to have risen to 66%. The world's cities are growing.
World City Populations 1950-2030 shows the population size of cities around the world for 1950, 1990 and 2015. The map also shows the predicted population size of each city in the year 2030. The populations for each year are visualized with nested circles placed over each city. The circles are proportional to the city populations in 1950, 1990, 2015 and 2030.
If you mouse-over a city on the map you can also view a line graph of the city's population over time, based on data from UN World Urban Prospects.
