Examining America's Bars with Google Maps

The Beer Belly of America

The Floatingsheep website has been carrying out some great analysis of user generated Google Map placemarks. Back in January I wrote about their comparison of the number of book stores and churches added to Google Maps across the USA.

Floatingsheep have now turned their attention to a comparison of grocery stores and bars across the USA. As you might expect grocery stores outnumber bars for most of North America. However they did discover what they are calling the "beer belly of America" in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

For these parts of the country the number of bars per 10,000 people is far higher than in the rest of the country. It's amazing what you can learn with Google Maps.
