Mapping the Ebola Outbreak - Part Two
HealthMap is a Google Maps based application that plots real-time worldwide infectious disease outbreaks around the world. HealthMap has now released a map to track the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
The 2014 Ebola Outbreak map tracks the number of deaths in each affected West African country. The map also allows you to plot the development and spread of the viral outbreak over time. If you use the controls beneath the map you can rewind the map to the first outbreak of a mystery hemorrhagic fever which killed 23 people in Guinea in March.
You can then forward through the timeline to chart the spread of the disease. If you select the present date you can read the latest Ebola reports tracked by HealthMap and also view the latest death toll from the virus in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia.
The UK's Channel 4 News has also released an interactive narrative map, The Deadly Spread of Ebola, which charts the spread of the current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. Al Jeezra's Mapping the World's Worst Ebola Epidemic uses data from the World Health Organization, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Liberia's health ministry to monitor the current outbreak
