Google Maps Passes Mapquest

Hitwise: Google Maps Passes Mapquest

The Understanding Google Maps & Yahoo Local Search blog is reporting that Google Maps has now surpassed Mapquest in monthly visitors, according to data from Hitwise. The author of the post, Mike Blumenthal, speculates that the latest monthly rise might be due to the start of Google’s expanded Local rollout.

I think that the Street View launch in mid-March in the UK and the Netherlands might also have played a part in the increase. The day after the Street View update Google Maps UK increased its traffic by 41%. That was the busiest ever day for Google Maps in the UK. The US Google Maps site also reportedly received an 84% increase in visits.
