Rio Youth on Google Maps
The UNICEF-GIS project aims to promote civic engagement in adolescents and young people (12 -18 years old) by giving them the tools to gather data about their communities. A phone application allows the youth to produce a realtime portrait of their community through geo-located photos and videos, organized into thematic Google Maps.
Currently UNICEF-GIS is running two projects The Rio Youth Mapping Project and the Port-au-Prince Youth Mapping Project. In both projects young people are using the phone applications to map and report on information about local services, social spaces and risks and hazards.
Both the Rio and Port-au-Prince projects have their own Google Maps where users can browse the reports submitted by the participants in each city.
