New York's Subway Deserts

Chris Wong has created a map of New York City's Subway Deserts. The map only shows areas og New York which are more than 500 meters from a subway station.

If you are caught in one of these transit deserts you might want to use Transit Battle NYC. Transit Battle NYC is an interactive isochrone map visualizing where in New York you should catch the bus and when you should use the subway instead.

Drag the marker to a location on the Transit Battle map of New York and you can instantly view an overlay visualizing where you can travel to fastest by bus and where you can travel fastest to by subway (from your selected location).

Chris Whong's NYC Taxis: A Day in the Life was one of my favorite maps of last year. The NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission has now released the data for all completed yellow taxi and green cab trips between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. It might therefore be worth keeping an eye on Chris's website in case he releases some more amazing visualizations of NYC taxi data.

Of course you could create your own visualizations with the data. This Reddit thread has links to the data hosted on BigQuery.
