Mapping Sherlock's London

The movie Mr Holmes, starring Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes, opens in the UK today. To get you in the mood for the film why not explore this map of Sherlock's London. The map features a number of locations which feature in the original novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The map of London used in Sherlock's London was originally created for a London Museum exhibition about Sherlock Holmes. The museum map includes a number of routes (marked in red) showing journeys taken by Holmes and Watson in three of Doyle's original stories.

It's a bit of shame that these routes haven't been made a little more interactive in this online version of the map (but I guess the routes have nothing to do with the movie).

If Sherlock's London had wanted some clues about how to map some of these journeys on a map then they could have checked out this old Hack Your Maps tutorial on A List Apart. The A List Apart article is a nice tutorial on some of the design issues facing developers when creating interactive maps for the web.

The map that the tutorial walks you through shows the locations of some of the most important scenes in the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans. The map includes some gorgeous map markers, styled map tiles and an innovative scrolling navigation device. In fact it is a much nicer map than Sherlock's London.
