The Worldwide Air Pollution Map

Yale University's Environmental Performance Index - Air Map visualizes air pollution levels across the world. The map uses ground level data from the World Health Organization and satellite-derived estimates calculated by researchers at Dalhousie University.

The map shows the levels of fine particulate matter or PM2.5 across the globe. It also allows you to view the location of the world' dirtiest power plants. People living in areas shaded black on the map are exposed to dangerous levels of particulate matter. Those living in areas shaded red are exposed to unhealthy levels.

In much of the world the poorest air quality correlates closely to population density. The main exception to this is in Northern Africa where high levels of particulates are caused by Saharan mineral dust.
