Open Mapping the Open Seas
OpenSeaMap extends OpenStreetMap coverage to provide a free global crowd-sourced nautical chart. The map uses OpenStreetMap map data with additional layers designed to aid marine navigation and provide information on ports and harbors.
OpenSeaMap includes a trip planning tool which allows you to plot a course with start and end coordinates for each stage of a marine journey. The trip planning tool calculates the total distance of the course and allows you to export tracks with a list of all waypoints. It is also possible to download OpenSeaMap itself for offline use on a computer, GPS device, phone or PDA.
The online map includes the option to view worldwide real-time ship and boat positions using data from Marine Traffic. The Marine Traffic layer shows the real-time position of vessels and information about the type of vessel, the vessel's length and information about its current course & speed.
