Friday Fun with Google Maps

Map Envelope

Here is a great idea. Create an envelope from a Google Map that when opened shows the recipient where the letter was sent from.

50 State Capitols in Street View
The Where's My Jetpack? blog created this cool movie looking at 50 state capitols on Google Maps.

Map Quotes
This little collection of map quotes should bring a smile to the face of the grumpiest cartographer. My favourite is,

"And then came the grandest idea of all! We actually made a map of the country, on the scale of a mile to the mile!"

"Have you used it much?" I enquired.

"It has never been spread out, yet," said Mein Herr: "the farmers objected: they said it would cover the whole country, and shut out the sunlight! So we now use the country itself, as its own map, and I assure you it does nearly as well.
"

-- Lewis Carroll, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893).

Angry Frogmen

This shot of two men in wetsuits chasing the Google Street View car was definitely the most linked to image from this week's new release of Street View. But just in case you haven't seen it yet, here it is again.
