Putting Art on the Map
Last week Maps Mania featured the GalleriesNow Art Map, an events and exhibition guide for public and commercial contemporary art galleries. Curiously, while there have been many events listings maps developed over the years, there have been very few dedicated art gallery maps.
The Art Map allows users to find contemporary art galleries around the world and also to find out what exhibitions and events are currently taking place in those galleries. Given the popularity of art galleries and exhibitions I would expect there to be far more art gallery / exhibition maps in existence.
Rachel Burns discusses this problem of the lack of repositories of art venues in A Case Study on artmapproject.com. Faced by a lack of any kind of repository of Manchester’s cultural institutions, galleries and underground venues Rachel decided to build her own Manchester art map.
The result is the Art Map Project, a map of Manchester's art galleries, exhibitions and events. The map shows the location of Manchester's art galleries, museums and attractions. It also provides a comprehensive guide to current exhibitions and events in the city.
ArtRabbit is another art gallery map, with a more global ambition. ArtRabbit maps over 5,000 art venues in over 50 countries. Using the map it is possible to search for art galleries, exhibitions and events by location and by date.
Registered users of ArtRabbit can follow specific galleries and exhibitions and add events to the map and events listings. Registered users can also follow other users and leave comments on exhibition and event listings,
